What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is an ancient rite of the Church. In it, the Bishop prays that the Holy Spirit may dwell in and with the confirmand for the rest of their lives. It is an opportunity to explore your Christian faith, and to renew your commitment to God and his Church.

The Church of England teaches that Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to enable you to live in the way of Jesus.

You can find out more about the Church of England’s theology of Confirmation here.

Who can be Confirmed?

In the Diocese of Southwark, anyone who has been Baptised and is over the age of 10 can be Confirmed. It is possible to be Baptised and Confirmed on the same day, or to be received into the Church of England and Confirmed, if you previously worshipped in a tradition that does not have Confirmation.

Getting Confirmed at St John's

Confirmation tends to happen once a year. It may happen at our church, or we may join with other local churches for bigger Confirmation services.

It is important to prepare for Confirmation in more depth than Baptism. Before being Confirmed, you are expected to come along to a short course on the Christian faith, which explores your own faith, and the fundamentals of our shared beliefs. These typically occur in the six-to-eight weeks before the service of Confirmation. It is an opportunity to learn and ask questions about Christianity, who God is, and who we are as children of God. We offer separate Confirmation preparation for adults and children. Please refer to our safeguarding policy for information about our work with children and young people.

We are currently accepting expressions of interest for Confirmation on 04 May 2025. Confirmation preparation begins on Sunday 06 April 2025, for six weeks.
