Festivals and Seasons

The Christian year is marked with the changing seasons and several festivals. Advent, the beginning of the Church year, is the time in the run-up to Christmas where we recall the proclamation by the prophets of the coming Saviour. At Christmas, we remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the coming down from heaven of God himself. In Epiphanytide, we remember the various ways Jesus revealed his power to the world – his recognition by the magi and Simeon and Anna, his baptism, and turning water into wine. In Lent, we journey with Christ through the wilderness, preparing ourselves to recall his passion and death. In Eastertide, we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and his triumph over the powers of evil. We recall how he ascended into heaven, and the sending of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.

Throughout the year, we celebrate festival services, giving thanks for the lives and witness of the Apostles, and crucial events in the history of Jesus’ ministry. We also mark local and national occasions, like Harvest and Remembrance Sunday.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25
